Construction opportunities outside of Ireland?

11.02.20 · Construction News

According to the European Commission, the construction sector provides 18 million direct jobs and contributes to about 9% of the EU's GDP. It also creates new jobs, drives economic growth, and provides solutions for social, climate and energy challenges.

Due to their expertise many Irish companies have won major construction contracts across Europe, from Finland and Norway to the Netherlands and Switzerland.  This has opened up exciting opportunities to travel and work on glamorous large-scale projects such as the DigiPlex data centre in Sweden, which is powered entirely by green energy. Having this type of project experience on a CV makes a candidate highly valuable.

There are many high values heavy industrial projects underway right now, and anyone with pharmaceutical or data construction experience is highly sought after. Companies have brought people in for interview with just one years’ experience without even looking at their CV because demand is so great.  If you are a QS, Electrical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer working on commercial projects at the moment, and you are interested in getting into large scale industrial projects in Europe, now is a great time to do it, because there is so much work out there.  And it will add many strings to your bow in terms of your experience and what you can do in the future.

Another benefit with many European projects is that your flights, accommodation and daily living allowance is all paid for, so you are living and working in Europe for free. Workers have weekends off to do the tourist thing and experience the culture and see the sights, as well as getting to work on these big projects. Depending on the project and the position there are also options to travel home every weekend. There are incredible opportunities available.
